No Mans Land for hundreds of kilometresIn my opinion, if you are going on a bike trip or by any other personal vehicle, you should not pre-book hotels. I will explain to you why.
I travelled in early June, on my bike trip from Chandigarh to Ladakh via Manali and came back via Srinagar. This gave me an experience of both possible routes to reach Ladakh.
NOTE: There are no expensive luxury hotels in Ladakh other than Leh, so be with nature and enjoy it.
Hotels On Manali - Leh Route
This route will really test your patients and endurance skills. Tuff terrains make, melting Glaciers, and 365 km ok NO MANs LAND makes your life difficult. But the views you get here are amazing, I can't explain in words.
Booking hotels on this route doesn't make sense, I personally pre-booked hotels and almost every booking was wasted because we were not able to reach hotels on time.
Places to stay
- Keylong (116 Km from Manali on Leh Manali Highway)
- Sarchu (223 Km from Manali on Leh Manali Highway)
We had pre-booked hotels in Manali, Sarchu, Leh, Pangong, Nubra, Sonmarg, Jammu. For a group of 10 people, pre-booking expenses were huge. To reach Leh via Manali, we need to get DAILY Pass from Manali government office, and it took us 3-4 hours extra to get these passes than we planned.
I stood in line at 7 am morning, office opened at 10 am and it was almost 1 PM we got the pass. As soon as we got pass we started our journey. Till 4 Pm we had crossed Rohtang pass. Sarchu, where we had booked tents, was 170 km approx away. Its was no way we could drive at night with temperatures more than -2 degree Celcius. At a check post, we got advice from the army to not take a risk.
We had to make a decision and we decided to stay at Keylong. As our Sarchu tent booking was around 2000 per person (including dinner and breakfast) all money was wasted. Next day we started early and decided to have lunch at Sarchu.
Once we reached, we enquired the same tents were costing us 700 only. We were shocked. This was because these hotels and tents were managed by local people and a huge sum of money is taken by online agents which sit in cities and manage booking for them. Same was the case hotels in Nubra and hotels in Pangong too.
Hence be prepared for unexpected during this trip, and plan your stay as per situation and a half rate.

Hotels On Srinagar - Leh Route
While returning realized this route is not as scenic as Manali, instead of frozen lakes and Glaciers, there were towns and villages. Hence you can easily get accommodation in Sonmarg. Getting Accommodation in Jammu or Accommodation in Srinagar is also easy.
